How Does An Extra 20 Pounds Affect You at Home or at Work?

Put on a 10 pound vest and 5 pound ankle weights to see how that extra weight changes your performance in the gym or at home.

You'll become more convinced to watch your food choices, portions and exercise regime.

The more weight you carry around the house, the harder your heart has to work, the more stress there will be on your joints and your breathing is challenged too.  Why did my trainer do this to me?  To burn more calories and to remind me not to eat too much, or to exercise too little!

I found the squats, the forward/sideways lunges, the treadmill, the box steps and bike, all required greater balance, increased breathing and more intensity from me.

It was a joy to take off the weights and try the exercises without them!

A great way to exercise at home, is to walk or run up and down the stairs without holding on to the railing.  You can do lunges down the hallway holding on to cans of soup.  Be imaginative.  You'll feel better and keep your weight down.

Moral of the story?  Keep your weight in the normal range and keep up the good work with your exercise routine, supplementation and healthy food choices.

Is your home healthy or hazardous?

Are there some health hazards in your home that you might not be aware of?

Expert microbiologist Dr. Myron Wentz discusses some of these facts in his new book "The Healthy Home," which will be released March 22.

Here are some tips from the expert and his book:
1) Take your shoes off before entering your home. We walk around unwittingly in car oil, pesticides, animal waste and toxins.

2) Teflon pots and pans release potential hazardous fumes and particles into the air such as toxic gases, carcinogens and global pollutants. Try using a well-seasoned cast iron skillet instead.

3) “Wrinkle free” sheets can expose you to the chemical PFC (perfluorochemcials) and is linked to reproductive and development toxicity, as well as cancers of the bladder and liver. Try using natural alternatives like cotton or linen.

4) Fluorescent light bulbs will make you feel drained. They contain a toxic gas known as mercury vapor. Instead try purchasing regular incandescent light bulbs.

5) Electrical appliances create EMFs (electromagnetic fields) which are similar to those found under power lines that were linked to cancer clusters. Make sure you unplug your appliances when they are not being used.

ABOUT HIM
Dr. Wentz holds a Ph.D. in microbiology with a specialty in immunology from the University of Utah. He founded Gull Laboratories in 1974 and developed the first commercially available diagnostic test for the Epstein-Barr virus. Later he founded USANA Health Sciences and the Sanoviv Medical Institute. Honored in June 2007 with the Albert Einstein Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Life Sciences, he is the author of A Mouth Full of Poison and Invisible Miracles as well as the upcoming book, The Healthy Home.

Phantom Power. How Much Is It Costing You?

Many gadgets in the home, including your stereo and computer, waste power even when they are turned off, says a recent article in Canada's national newspaper, The Globe and Mail.  That's Phantom Power.

I had heard about this before, from Dr. Myron Wentz, PhD, Immunology and Microbiology.  His newest book, The Healthy Home, looks at the various toxins and hazards that lurk in the home.

In this case, even when you turn off an appliance, like an iron, washing machine or printer, electricity is still flowing when the unit is plugged into the wall.  You can save a lot of money on your electricity bill each year, simply by unplugging everything that isn't used on a consistent basis.

In fact the typical North American home has about 40 appliances that qualify to be unplugged until being used.  The phantom power they use adds up to about 10 percent of residential electricity use, says the Globe article.

You can save money by switching to a high-efficiency air conditioner and washing machine, dryer and dishwasher.  We noticed a definite drop in our energy bill once we installed new windows throughout our home.

So, hunt around your home for "phantom power" culprits, and unplug them.  If everyone did that, the need for power in the world would definitely decrease.  And for you, it means more money to buy fresh fruit or to support your favorite charity.

#Terrance Howard Comments on "The Healthy Home" by #Wentz

Terrence Howard, star of CRASH, IRON MAN, and HUSTLE & FLOW, visited the StyleLounge at Sundance and picked up a copy of Dr. Myron Wentz and Dave Wentz’s new book THE HEALTHY HOME (out this March 2011). The new book offers important information on how to keep your family and loved ones safe from hidden household dangers, which Howard took note of as he has two daughters and a son.
Terrence Howard The Healthy Home

Terrance Howard said, “This book could save my family.”

In The Healthy Home, a father and son–Dr. Myron Wentz, well-known microbiologist and founder of the USANA Corporation, and Dave Wentz, CEO of the USANA Corporation–take readers on a tour of a specific home for a look at the surprising health risks posed by the everyday products and behaviors of a modern family. Beginning in the bedroom and ending in the garage and backyard, readers learn about the degenerative effects of toxins in the home and receive simple solutions to help minimize exposure without foregoing convenience.

The Healthy Home is not a comprehensive tome on modern health hazards; nor is it a treatise on eco-conscious living. Instead, the book focuses on the most important environment–the home–and the problems that can most easily be lessened or eliminated. Busy parents who suspect that they should be doing more to protect their family but don’t know where to start will learn about practical changes they can make in the next fifteen minutes, fifteen days, or fifteen months to create a haven for healthier living.
