Radiation From New Cell Tower Causing Concern

More people are becoming aware of the possible dangers from radiation emitted from cell phone towers.

Residents in a residential area of Winnipeg, Manitoba, are banding together to stop the Manitoba Telephone System from building a cellphone tower behind their local community center.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, residents say possible health risks of exposure to low-level radio-frequency radiation could affect the children.   Residents are concerned for health reasons as well as for the esthetics of the forestry-type neighborhood.

Our former blog post addresses the study by the National Research Council Press on the radiation from cell phone towers.

The Vancouver School Board has banned cellphone antennas within 300 metres of existing schools.  A Community Center in Winnipeg would seem to qualify for their stipulations, but to date, Winnipeg's policy states, "The City prefers cell towers and other communication facilities not be located in or near residential areas and have minimal impact on living areas and areas of historical or environmental significance."  A distance away, was not specified how far.

It would seem prudent to keep the cellphone towers away from populated areas until further research has been done on the short and long term effects of the radiation.  While many of the stated side effects like nausea, visual disruptions, depression, memory loss, headaches, skin problems and lack of sleep are serious enough, the possibility of diseases like cancer, are the more serious fears.
